I APOLOGIZE

In my very first post, I vowed never to speak of the Britneys, Parises and Lindsays on this blog.
But let's make an exception, shall we?

The world was treated to one of the worst "performances" ever by Ms. Spears (or anyone else) at MTV's Video Music Awards Sunday night.
It was all over the place on Monday, including a report on our 5:30 news.

Coming out of the report, I volunteered the observation that "I'm sure she could find work at one of the establishments along I-91 in North Hartford."
I was, of course, referring to the several strip joints in that area. (Not that I would know anything about them.)

The BF (Britney Faithful) were not pleased.
As always, in the interest of equal time, here are the 3 emails we received. (Spelling, punctuation, and grammar NOT corrected.)

I am appalled by Gerry's comment about there being certain places for Britney Spears, after watching her devestating performance on the VMA's. I'm not a Britney fan, but she's human too and degrading her with a comment like that on public television is disgusting and Gerry should know better. She has been through a lot and she obviously was upset about the performance herself. There's no reason to beat a dead horse. I no longer care to listen to a word Gerry says.

I watched the news at 5:30 and the report was on the performance, or lack of one by Britney Spears. I thought the comment made by Gerry Brooks was uncalled for! Commenting he new of a place on a street in West Hartford she could perform. That was unnecessary, and in poor taste. His views need not be made. I feel bad for the girl, and hopefully she will get her act together.

what an unnecessary cheap shot at Britney Spears on tonights 9/10/07 5:30 broadcast. don't confuse this message as a rant from a fan. this is a message from a viewer that expects a degree of maturity from announcers who express opinion. shame on you for allowing reference to her [Britney] finding work 'off the highway'

Actually, I thought I was kind, considering most of the other coverage. And I thought she looked pretty good, unlike most others.

But having read and considered the emails...and having THOROUGHLY reviewed the tape of Ms. Spears performance (hey, it's my job), I would like to issue a profound apology.

To each and every exotic dancer who works in one of those establishments along I-91 in Hartford: I am really, truly sorry I lowered you to Ms. Spears' level. I have no doubt you rehearse and perform at a much higher level than Ms. Spears did Sunday night. My deepest apologies.

I seriously CANNOT believe little girls look up to these people? They arent very talented and are really bad role models. Britney needs to step aside and start being a REAL mom to her kids! I'm 24 a wife and a mother of two boys and you wouldnt catch me drinking and partying its not acceptable. She needs to get herself together never ming prancing around like a kid!

Jerry - Your comments were right on par. Please have a level of compassion though for the women who are entertaining in the establishments that you mentioned. They are working for a living and may not be the greatest dancers and such, but they are not being paid millions of dollars to entertain the public.

I don't think Britney could even get a job at Hooters with a performance like the one she did.

Good work and your comments were justified. It brought a smile to my face after having listened to all the depressing news you report each evening. Keep up the good work.

I was happy to see you back from vacation as I always enjoy your newscasts and I smiled in appreciation at your comment about Britney. You always deliver the news with integrity, insight, and truthfulness and your comments bring a down to earth quality to the newscast.

There are those who might think I stepped over the line by "editorializing" on air about L'Affaire Britney.
But I don't think you can "editorialize" about something that's not really news.
Then what is it, if not news?
I really don't know.
Thanks for your comments.

Thank you for being the person you are. If anyone should appologize, it should be Ms. Spears herself.
I didn't see the awards show and I apparently didn't miss anything good anyway. Ms. Spears should be more responsible of a woman.

Well, I think you were on the line w/ the comment but that's why we love you! You seldom cross it and you're wise and experienced enough to teeter on it as we all hold our breath, hoping you don't fall.
