LET'S SHAKE ON IT

Or not. From our 11pm news Monday night:
THINK TWICE THE NEXT TIME YOU HAVE TO SHAKE HANDS WITH A GUY. THE "HAND WASHING POLICE" HAVE BEEN OUT...AND FIGURE THAT A THIRD OF MEN DON'T WASH THEIR HANDS AFTER USING THE MEN'S ROOM. ONLY 12% OF WOMEN DON'T WASH UP. THE STUDY IS BASED ON OBSERVATIONS OF MORE THAN 6-THOUSAND PEOPLE IN 4 CITIES.
This is not a stunning revelation to the portion of the population that uses men's rooms.
Men generally have 3 approaches to "washing" their hands in a public restroom.
---Actually wash with soap and water.
---Take a quick pass under the faucet (no soap).
---No one else is in the men's room, so you just finish your business and stroll right out.
We have a pretty clean bunch at NBC 30. One guy washes his hands 45 times a day. Probably not much skin left on those mitts.
Another is so germ-phobic, he flushes the toilet with his foot, which isn't the most hygienic thing for the person who follows him. Where's that shoe been?
We also have Purell, which smells nice, but I've never thought of as a substitute for good old soap and water.
I always wash my hands in public restrooms, but sometimes I wonder 'why bother?'
I mean, you wash, but then you have to grab the door handle.
Who was the last person to grab the handle? Did HE wash? Or the guy before him? When was the last time the handle was washed? Why am I even thinking about this? What ARE the lyrics to "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida?"
Anyway, the guys who really worry me are those who have to stand in men's rooms all day compiling this survey.
Do they use a clipboard? A clicker? Do they wash after they go?
Maybe if they stood there and held the door more guys would wash. And they might get tips.
"What do you do?"
"I stand in men's rooms all day and watch."
"Oh. Your parents must be very proud."

Here's one for you
Why does your nose itch after you touch something you know has germs?
Okay maybe that is just my warped imagination.
We both have strange thoughts, don't we Mark?
This story was covered on just about every program from Good Morning America, The Today Show and Regis and Kelly. Gerry, you said it the best. Thanks for another smile.
Linda
Thank you Linda.
I'd shake your hand, but...
