BEDTIME STORY

My favorite headline on our website:

SPEARS’ MOM DELAYS PARENTING BOOK RELEASE

Oh gee, why? Because her eldest daughter has gone from Pop Princess to Slut Queen?
Or because her youngest moneymaker got knocked up at 16?

The book is called “Pop Culture Mom: A Real Story of Fame and Family in a Tabloid World.”

And get this: it was to be published by Thomas Nelson, Inc. a Christian book publisher that claims to be the world’s largest publisher of Bibles in English.
So who do you think really pulled the plug: the proud mom (above), or the world’s largest publisher of Bibles in English?

Let me suggest shopping the book to a different publisher with an alternative title.
How about: “Call Me Ma: How I’d Die of Embarrassment If I Had Any Brains.”

With America’s seemingly endless fascination with celebrity, notoriety, and (ideally, of course) a combination of both, Jeffrey Dahmer would have come out with a cookbook by now had he survived a prison beating.
Maybe we can look forward to a literary effort by Roger Clemens called “Pitching for the Truth.”

Role models?
If they are, we're in big trouble.

I never understood the fascination the public has with celebrity. I don't consider celebrities "news"worthy. Give me a story on cancer research breakthroughs or a heroic service person. What if no one reported a celebrity story? Without the attention, it might all go away. I sure hope grandma is not allowed anywhere near those grandkids. I can just see the dollar signs in her eyes every time another grandbaby is conceived.

Linda and Mel...I'm with you.
If I never saw another celebrity story (even on those I like), it would be fine with me.

Oh, how scarry it is when K-Fed is the "responsible" one. I'm all for Jamie Lynn's parents supporting her, but what about the guidance BEFORE???? Oh, wait....that makes sense. I hope parents will use the Spears' family model as "What not to do" instead of, "Well, that's real life and it's ok." And is Nickelodeon going to encourage the behavior by not cancelling the show??? Every pre-teen girl now knows that Jamie-Lynn is a pregnant teen. By not putting their foot down, Nickeloden is saying the behavior is ok too. Bad, bad, bad. It's kind of like Paris Hilton saying she shouldn't have to go to jail, even though she broke the law. Let's all teach our kids that the rules don't apply to them. That would be GREAT for our country--NOT!

I have a couple of comments- first I really take issue with someone being pregnant being referred to as "knocked up". Think when this child grows up that she/he will read descriptions of the pregnancy in this derogatory fashion. Second... by turning this into a blog subject matter and inviting our comments-you are bringing another level of legitimacy to the whole story. Let it go, quit reporting on it, quit discussing it, quit making it bigger than it is. News peoples continued coverage of these issues make them bigger than the life that they have. It doesn't change the pregnancy, but it takes it out of the mainstream and puts it back where it should be-- between the family.
