TALK TO ME!
Well, maybe not literally, but…
We’ve visited this subject before, but now I’m convinced that we’ve finally arrived at a time when an email from one person to another can be construed as a warm, heartfelt form of communication.
I bring this up again, because of my new “friends” on Facebook. (If you want to know why I’m on Facebook, please see the November 1st post, “Me? Antisocial?".)

I bring this up again, because of my new “friends” on Facebook. (If you want to know why I’m on Facebook, please see the November 1st post, “Me? Antisocial?".)
Most of my “friends” are people I work with. I see them almost every day. I certainly like all of them, but I’m not about to communicate with them on a social networking website when I can send them an email, call their extension, or (gasp?) walk right up to them and actually TALK!
And today, I gained a new Facebook “friend,” a good guy with whom I socialize with from time to time. He has my phone number!
Then, there is a colleague who emailed me, suggesting I blog about a subject in the news. He said he’d be interested in what I thought about it.
But all he has to do is turn around and ask. We sit three feet apart!
One of the best things that happened to me in 2007 was when our Vice President of News (sounds much better than “News Director”) Mike St. Peter asked me to start blogging.

One of the best things that happened to me in 2007 was when our Vice President of News (sounds much better than “News Director”) Mike St. Peter asked me to start blogging. It has been very satisfying, often therapeutic, and has allowed many of us (“the regulars,” as I think of you) to establish a really nice rapport. I honestly enjoy hearing from you and reading what you think.
But when we stop personally communicating with people we KNOW, what does that say about us as a society?
So in 2008, resolve to call a friend instead of, say, text-messaging.

One warning, though: an actual, handwritten letter in a stamped envelope could cause heart failure.

Good Thursday morning, and I wanted to wish you and Lisa the best with a new face coming into the 5, 6 and 11pm newcasts...my next door neighbor, Keisha Grant. So we're back to three! She is so talented and is perfect for prime time. I hope NBC won't gobble her up!
I'll be watching at 5, 5:30 AND 6pm...sometimes I don't make it to the 11....I wish her, and you the best. Peter, a regular (I think) on this 0.5 degree morning. That's the actual backyard temperature at 5:58am. Brrr....
I was going to leave you a comment here, but I'll go write on your Facebook wall instead.
Do you even know what that is?
:)
I am just a teeny bit tempted to sign up for Facebook just to check out your profile, but I'm resisting this social networking thing! Blogging and emailing is about as far as I'll go. And you're right about emailing...it now seems to be all warm and fuzzy compared to blogging and Facebook. I'm thinking it must be a blast to work at NBC30. If I recall correctly, Michele works with you? Between you and her, you must keep your co-workers thoroughly entertained!
And, thank you Mike St. Peter. You recognized Gerry's hidden talents that have brought lots of smiles to the viewers of NBC30.
Linda
I agree with Gerry. We all need more one-to-one communication. Pick up the phone and call a friend tonight. You'll both be glad you did.
Graham
Graham and Peter...thank you for your thoughts. I'm looking forward to taking up space next to Keisha.
Linda...there's not much on my profile. We do have fun at work (or at least try), and that Michele, she's something else.
As for you Michele...*$&^@!
Be nice Gerry, or I will hijack this blog and make you a Yankees fan for life...
Or I will vote you most likely to be in love with Derek Jeter on Facebook!
Hooray! I am gasping for air after reading your comments about emails, IMs, txt. messages, blogging, etc. YES! Let's talk...face to face. Verbal communication is a skill and needs to be practiced. I admit there are moments when I'd like to txt. message my husband rather than facing him, but...wouldn't work. He's a lousy typer and the response would be hours in coming. Kudos to you, Mr. Brooks. Joan Rivers always says, "Can we talk?!" Yep! That's the way!
Your comment about the handwritten note made me laugh out loud, Gerry. I teach my clients (mostly salespeople) to write a handwritten put-the-real-stamp-on note to key contacts as a way of making themselves more memorable. It's absolutely stunning what a reaction it gets, and how it helps to develop the relationship. Haven't yet heard of a case of heart failure, but I'm still teaching this technique, so I'll let you know if it happens ;)
I have a facebook account (I'm 18, what else is new) and am highly tempted to add you, haha.
Welcome, Church Lady...
Lady Pats Fan, I hope Mr.Brady enhanced your holidays...
And Ryan, if you add me, just know I don't check in there very often. I'm happier right here.
Mr. Brady enhances just about everything, my dear Gerry! Waiting with bated breath to see who the next opponent will be - will be spending the weekend scoping out the competition (and calling my hubby at work with the play-by-play)!
I love how people at work leave you a voice mail or e-mail and they sit like 5 feet away from you.
E-mails sometimes are good for covering parts of your anatomy.
But a lot of times I just take to the time for some one on one. Then I can see their reactions to my answer.
This also cuts down on you wondering if they are giving you a salute with just one finger as well HA!
Like I said give me some good old fashioned one on one time.
Oh and I forgot to congratulate Keisha for joining you and Lisa on the afternoon and 11 pm news casts.
Liked watching her in the morning . Now she can sleep in till at least 9 instead of getting up at 2 Am like she said to Chaz and AJ.
